The toll plazas along highways are going to be eliminated, and the government has announced that it would implement a new tolling system in place of FASTag.

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has made a commitment to putting an end to the toll plazas system on highways as quickly as possible by implementing a new system. According to Gadkari, the administration intends to do rid of toll plazas since they cause a lot of difficulties, such as traffic jams and lengthy lines of people waiting in line.

On Wednesday, Gadkari shared with the press that his ministry is evaluating two different technologies in order to eliminate the need for actual toll plazas throughout the NH network. Tolling systems that use GPS and those that use Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) are two examples of these two technologies.

What method will be used to subtract the toll from the GPS?

In order to make use of this technology, you will need to install a GPS unit in your vehicle. The computation of the toll will begin as soon as you bring the car onto the tolled highway, and the amount of money that will be removed from your account will be determined by the amount of miles that you have gone on that road. Because the government will be immediately deducting this sum from your bank account, you will also be required to provide them with information about your bank account. Additionally, you will be required to register your car in order to use this system. It may be possible to eliminate discounts on tolls given to residents of the immediate area by using a tolling system that is based on GPS.

What are the potential advantages of this?

People will not be required to pay set rates, but rather the same amount regardless of how far they have gone if the GPS-based toll system is put into place. Because of this, the issue of traffic congestion at toll plazas will no longer exist. Along with this, the daily instances of violence that take place at the toll plaza would come to a stop as well.

In the meanwhile, official data reveals that FASTag penetration has skyrocketed from approximately 16% in 2017-18 to 96.3% in 2021-22. During the 2017–2018 fiscal year, the total amount of money received from tolls was 21,948 crore, including 3,532 crore from FASTag. However, in 2021-22, the amount of toll revenue collected using FASTags skyrocketed to 33,274 crore, out of a total of 34,535 crore collected in revenue from tolls.
